GOVERNMENT SHAME ON KURNELL BEACH

Cronulla MP Malcolm Kerr demanded the Keneally Labor Government take immediate action to rectify the botched restoration job of Silver Beach, Kurnell following the construction of the Kurnell desalination plant.

Concerns regarding works progress were raised by residents in June with the Desalination Plant Liasion Group and the Minister for Water.  Despite this Silver Beach has been left in a condition that is unacceptable to the community and to Council.

Despite assurances from the Government that Silver Beach would be left in an ‘as good or better” condition the beach width has been reduced by approximately 30%.

The resulting increased road verge has increased, questionable sandstone has been used for the seawall and sand of a different variety has been imported from the Rocla sand mining site.

“The use of sand from a sand mining site in this manner is particularly insulting in that the Government has continued to allowed the bowels of Kurnell to be mined of sand over many years.  26 000 tonnes of sand from Kurnell has already been used in the construction of the desalination plant” Mr Kerr said

““The Keneally Government walked all over the people of Kurnell with the construction of the desalination plant and continue to do so by failing to consult or even listen to complaints that arose during the restoration”

“Residents have put up with two years of having their lives and neighbourhood turned upside down and the botched ‘restoration’ of this once beautiful beach is nothing short of a disgrace”

“I demand the Minister for Water end the arrogance and personally intervene to speak with residents and the Council with a view to coming to a satisfactory outcome” Mr Kerr concluded.
