GOVERNMENT SLOW TO ACT BUT QUICK TO FLASH

Cronulla MP Malcolm Kerr today warned Shire residents that the Keneally mobile speed cameras would be coming to two locations in the Cronulla electorate.

Captain Cook Drive, Caringbah and The Kingsway, Cronulla have been selected by the RTA with a criteria allegedly based on crash history.  Unlike fixed speed cameras there will be no advance warning.

Mr Kerr said the State Labor Government is quick to act on mobile speed cameras but notoriously slow to attend to major intersection and road safety issues that contribute to crashes in the Cronulla electorate.

An example of this is the Kingsway/Gannons Road intersection where the public campaigned for years for a simple right turn arrow, Mr Kerr said.

“It took a pedestrian death at the Kingsway, Caringbah before right turn arrows were installed to allow pedestrians to cross the Kingsway in safety.  Despite these improvements, motorists tell me on a daily basis that these intersections still represent a real danger to motorists and pedestrians alike”

The new mobile speed cameras in NSW are estimated to result in an extra 1600 bookings per day and raise an additional $137 million in revenue.

The NSW Liberals & Nationals believe the purpose of speed cameras is to stop speeding and save lives, not revenue raising.  They should be located in black spots with the highest road toll not where NSW Labor can make the most money.  Speed cameras need to be clearly signed.  Getting a ticket in the mail three weeks after the event is not a deterrent to speeding.  Visible enforcement is.

We support a range of measures to stop speeding such as more resources for highway patrols, red light cameras and fixed cameras.
