GANNONS ROAD LIGHTS A WIN FOR MOTORISTS Print E-mail

Cronulla MP Malcolm Kerr welcomed the announcement in the NSW State Budget for right turn arrows at the horror intersection of The Kingsway and Gannons Road, Caringbah.

After nine long years and numerous collisions, the Government has finally heeded calls by the community and allocated $300 000 for the project .

Both the northern and southern ends of Gannons Road will receive right turn arrows with the southern end being widened to accommodate a right turn lane.

However, Mr Kerr said he was disappointed that no timeline could be given for the project with surveys, design and community consultation expected to take 12 months.

Gannons Road has a daily traffic volume of 15 361 per day with significant delays during the PM peak period equal to the worst presently experienced at any other intersection in the Shire.

Mr Kerr said he would be calling on the Minister for Roads to expedite the matter.

“If a decision can be made overnight by the State Government to build a desalination plant at Kurnell, surely road safety is of equal importance and upgrading one intersection should not take 12 months” Mr Kerr said.

“The petition in my office to upgrade the Gannons Road intersection brings an immediate response from visitors to my office”

“Many motorists, even professional drivers, say they avoid the intersection if possible because of the delays and dangers”

“This upgrade can’t come soon enough and I thank the community for getting behind the campaign to improve road safety at this intersection” Mr Kerr concluded.
