Cronulla MP, Malcolm Kerr said today that instead of installing new speed cameras at local intersections, the Government should be concentrating on making intersections safer and more efficient.
The Government is installing new speed cameras at the multiple intersection of the Kingsway, Kareena Road and Port Hacking Road, Miranda. This intersection is outdated and congested with motorists given only a few seconds with a right turn arrow to turn onto the Kingsway leaving long queues waiting. The situation is no better for pedestrians with pedestrians forced to wait for long periods only to be given a few seconds to scurry across the road, while competing with turning traffic. “This intersection is a major junction as well as being adjacent to Sutherland and Kareena Hospitals” Mr Kerr said. “Preliminary findings from my recent Cronulla electorate survey have this intersection scoring high among residents as one of the most dangerous in the Shire, yet all the Government can do is to install speed cameras to raise more revenue” “As a result of the Government’s higher density policy, our Shire roads and intersections are under more and more pressure yet it takes years for the Government to take any remedial action. This was demonstrated by the years it took for the Gannons Road intersection upgrade that still leaves much to be desired” “Road safety comes first and there is no excuse for running a red light. All motorists want is a Government as proactive and responsive to providing safe road conditions as it is to revenue raising” |
